Old Testament Theology Final Review
Related Materials:
Note: Students should find the following questions helpful in reviewing for the final exam. Some of these questions may appear verbatim on the examination. Some may be reworded or otherwise altered. Questions of the same sort as this review may also appear on the final.
1. Summarize the history of the study of connections between the OT and NT, noting adequacies, inadequacies, strengths, weaknesses, and suggesting the approach you believe best meets the need of OT Theology.
2. Tom Olbricht's theological summaries of the OT and NT are titled "He Loves Forever" and "His Love Compels", respectively. Based on these titles, what connections does Olbricht draw between the OT and NT. Does this adequately meet the need of a biblical theology? an OT theology? a NT theology? Why or why not? Assess strengths/weaknesses.
3. Assess the adequacy of Olbricht's OT theology, "He Loves Forever," based upon the Kaiser work. How would Kaiser assess Olbricht? Note similarities and differences.
4. The systematic/thematic work of Dyrness includes the following 14 chapters: God's self-revelation, nature of god, creation and providence, man and woman, sin, covenant, law, worhsip, piety, ethics, wisdom, spirit of God, prophecy, hope of Israel. Which three of these do you think most reflect possible major themes/centers for an adequate OT theology, which three of these are least a reflection of major themes/centers for an adequate OT theology? Explain your answers by noting strengths and weaknesses based upon the class text by Kaiser.
5. In which two of the minor prophets do you most clearly see the "promise" theme. Why? Explain your answer.
6. Explore and summarize the difficulty or potential disconnection between wisdom literature and theology.
7. Suggest two or three themes which you think are viable options for an OT center, rate them from 1-5 (worst to best), choose the best one, tell why you made that choice based on principles of historicity, similarity, adequacy, correlation, and completeness.
