Time. Allow me a preacher’s perspective. Today is the Sunday of the “bad time change.” Yes, we “lost” an hour, but even worse, people have trouble getting up and around. People are late to church; some fail to attend at all. The worship often lacks energy (like the people in attendance).
I like the practice of one church I know. At the spring time change, they tell their members to ignore the time change on Sunday morning, don’t set your clocks forward, come to church on the old time. Then at the end of worship, the entire church in unison sets their watches forward. A creative approach to a practical problem!
I also like the idea from a theological point of view. Is it not the responsibility of the preacher and the church to tell people what time it is? What better time to remind people that the times and the seasons are in God’s hands and in God’s control. Our lives and our time are not our own. It is whatever time God says it is. The writer of Ecclesiastes poetically says that all things are under God’s control and that there are appropriate seasons for the activities of life.
Today is a good time to ask how we are using our time. In case you missed it, here is a little something I wrote about this past week: Timely Reflections. It is also linked, along with other recent posts, on my Articles Index.
