Say an “Extra” Prayer Today

Today is National Day of Prayer. You perhaps know that the concept of designating a special day of prayer which is recognized by the government is under assault.  News reports indicate that this could be the last Day of Prayer which is recognized by the U.S. government.

I remember when prayer was removed from the schools. As one of my church members observed: “The question is not whether people will pray in schools, the question is whether that prayer will be formal and official.”

It is good when people are reminded to pray and given special opportunities to participate in prayer. It is good when hearts are combined in prayer on behalf of shared concerns. It is also good when people pray, simply because they are people of prayer. It is good when prayer is a central reality of our lives. David said he would pray seven times a day. The Jews scheduled prayer. What would happen if Christians prayed more? When do you pray?

What would your life be like if you prayed upon arising, at meals, in the middle of the morning, in the middle of the afternoon, and when you retire for the night? That would be seven prayers each day. Many would say such is impractical. OK–just say one extra prayer today, and tomorrow, and the next day. Make it a habit. Let us pray!
