Pray…for our Nation

“I urge, then, first of all, requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all men; for kings and those in authority” (1 Timothy 2:1).

Yesterday in a conversation with a sister in Christ (the wife of one of our elders), she mentioned her wish that we more often prayed publicly for our nation, especially in view of the upcoming election and the many problems before us as a nation. In almost the same breath, she mentioned the separation of church and state, and wanted to know what I thought about her idea.

In the biblical text above, Paul exhorts Timothy concerning prayer and intercession for those in authority. Likely Paul is urging Timothy to include these in prayer, and likewise to teach the church in Ephesus to so pray.

In today’s world, we might think of many who are “in authority” beyond government leaders–teachers, business men and women, opinion leaders, even spiritual leaders. All are appropriately included in our prayers. Will you take a moment today to pray for our leaders in government, business, education, and the church.
