bits from bob....
Probably I am too bold to suggest a list of "things Christians should know how to do." I recognize that the list developed by another person would differ. I do not suggest this list as the final word. I know that one cannot point to a specific text in the Bible to find such a list. Perhaps I should have titled this essay "things I want to be able to do as a Christian". The reader can determine the value and applicability of my list.
I want to be able to see God in the world and in his Word. I want to recognize God for who his is and build my own personal faith that guides my activities and actions. I want to see God at work in this world. I want to know how to read Scripture to know God and to know Christ rather than merely knowing about God.
I want to know how to worship God daily. I want to understand and practice individual worship as well as collective worship. I want to develop a heart for worship that desires to see, interact with, affirm, and glorify God. I want to respect and honor God.
I want to know how to pray. I want to know, understand, and experience personal relationship with God. I want to know his continuing presence, I want to know how to communicate with him, how to pray and talk to God.
I want to know how to use the Bible as the Word of God in my communication with God. I have thought about this area a lot and I want to develop and use seven practices: reading God's word, studying God's word, memorizing God's word, meditating on God's word, hearing or listening to God's word, praying God's word, and personalizing God's word.
I want to know how to respond to God appropriately. I want to imitate him and become like him. I want to become an authentic follower of Jesus.
I want to establish strong Christian relationships. I want to build strong family and friendship relationships based on an understanding of the nature of humanity.
I want to demonstrate the heart and attitude of Jesus through caring and compassion and through service. I want to reflect his glory.
I want to know how to balance life--understanding the interaction of the spiritual and physical, devoting appropriate time to both work and rest.
I want to know how to analyze and use the talents, skills, and creativity God has given me to his glory. I want to know how to be my genuine self in Jesus Christ.
I want to know how to share the good news of what God has done in Christ Jesus. I want to know how to tell that story effectively, to share the good news and to be a part of evangelizing the world, beginning in the places God gives me influence.
