Confronting the Challenges Facing the Church

The challenges facing the church in the 21st century are great. Ours has been called the age of "intolerant tolerance." Jesus' question has increasing relevance, "When the Son of Man returns, will he find faith on earth?" A list of challenges could be long. Let me name some I consider most serious: declining interest in Christianity as reflected in declining church attendance, decreased belief in the uniqueness of Jesus Christ, loss of respect for the authority of Scripture, moral relativism, political correctness, less and less emphasis on reaching the lost.

Our contemporary experience is not the first time God's church has been challenged. Titus 1:5 refers to deficiencies within the church. Titus 1:10-16 reflects serious challenges to the church and the faith of the believers on Crete. Paul urged Titus to teach the word, to reprove, exhort and speak clearly.

God's love and his extended grace is unconditional. God's acceptance is not. May the church not forget this basic truth. May we clearly proclaim the Good News so that others might find relationship in God's gracious gift.
