Course Description
This course is designed to acquaint the student with the Pastoral epistles. Primary work will be done from the writings to Timothy and Titus in commonly accepted chronological order. The student will become familiar with Pauline chronology, will be introduced to Pauline themes and theology through the study of key words and phrases in the text, and will focus special attention on the contribution of the Pastorals to Pauline studies.
The major thrust of the course will be the study of the text itself. The primary resource will be the English text, but the student may expect to be encouraged and challenged to examine the Greek text as skills and interests allow. The student will also be expected to spend significant time in primary research tools to develop an understanding of the text and a procedure whereby biblical texts may be examined.

Student Expectations

Attendance Policy. The school attendance policy will be followed. Students must attend class. Excused absences are available only through contact with the instructor the day class is missed or in advance. No absences are allowed during Maymester except in extreme cases. Students are responsible for consulting with the instructor when absent, and are responsible for obtaining and completing all assignments. The student may expect the final grade to be significantly reduced if tardiness or absences are excessive.
Classroom Conduct. Students must arrive at class on time.
Late Assignments. Homework must be turned in on time or early. Daily in-class work and quizzes cannot be made up. No makeup examinations are available in this class.
Withdrawal Procedure. Class withdrawal procedures are set forth in the catalog and must be followed. The student must initiate an official process. Non-attendance does not constitute official withdraw. The student who neither attends nor drops the class will receive an "F" grade.

Goals and Objectives

Criteria for Evaluation
The successful student will master each of the course objectives to some degree--no items will be completely omitted. The successful student will cooperate with the professor in a mutually stimulating and exciting learning experience. Evaluation will be based upon mastery of these goals and objectives as reflected in class participation, quizzes, homework and other various assignments, and examinations.

The student should have read 1 Timothy and Stott through p. 164 prior to coming to class.
Explain syllabus. Introduce Bruce and Tenney texts.
Introduce sermonic (class) development model.
Assign specific books and texts for exegetical and sermonic/class work.
The occasional nature of Pauline correspondence, the general outline of epistolary form, possible themes.
Afternoon (4)
1 Timothy 1-2. Stott.
Homework: Research and expand/verify list of Pauline themes (use Bruce, Tenney and library.)
Begin exegetical/sermonic process.
Begin Reading Titus and remainder of Stott.
Tuesday Morning (3)
Pauline theology.
1 Timothy 3-4. Stott.
Afternoon (4)
1 Timothy 5-6. Stott.
Introduce Titus.
Work on exegetical/sermonic/class effort.
Bibliography and research notes/abstracts to be submitted Tues. evening.
